Sterlite technologies, part of Anil Agarwal’s Sterlite group, is in advanced discussions to acquire UK-based cabling company Brand-Rex for roughly $55 million, or approximately Rs 250 crore, sources said. The acquisition move, advised by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), is in line with the company’s target of establishing itself among the top three players on the globe in every business segment it is into.
Edinburgh-based Murray Capital controlled Brand-Rex has been scouting for a buyer, and a potential transaction with the Rs 1,690-crore Sterlite Technologies could be unveiled within 3-4 weeks after completion of necessary formalities, sources close to the company added.
When contacted, the Sterlite Technologies spokesperson told ET last week: “We have recently announced our expansion plan in the optical fibre space. On the inorganic growth front, we keep on looking at various opportunities. But I would not be able to comment on whether we are eyeing Brand-Rex.”
Brand-Rex is Europe’s leading data communication cabling systems provider. It supplies cabling systems to support IT networks across various sectors, such as finance and education. It employs nearly 400 people. Sterlite Technologies, formerly Sterlite Optical Technolgies, is a leading global provider of wire and cable solutions for the telecom and power industry. It controls 46% share of the Indian optical market and 4% share of the global optical market.
